Tune-up

What a Mac “tune-up” really does, step by stepDraft

“Optimise your Mac” sounds like one big fix. In practice a tune-up is a handful of small resets, each of which fixes one kind of glitch. None of them makes a healthy Mac faster. Here’s what each does, and how to run it yourself.

Restart the Dock

Fixes a Dock that won’t show apps, badges that won’t clear, and a stuck Launchpad or Mission Control.

Terminal
killall Dock

Restart Finder

Fixes Finder windows that won’t update or a Desktop that won’t redraw. Finder reopens on its own.

Terminal
killall Finder

Rebuild the “Open With” list

Fixes duplicate or missing apps in the Open With menu. It rebuilds the Launch Services database, which can take a minute:

Terminal
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user

Reset Quick Look previews

Fixes previews (pressing Space in Finder) that show the wrong thumbnail or nothing at all:

Terminal
qlmanage -r cache
Tune-up

Or let Tinymop run them

Tune-up runs these and reports exactly what happened: what ran, how long it took, and anything it skipped and why, like Finder being busy. No scores, no “optimised!”.
