Large & Old

How to find large and old files on your MacDraft

A few big files usually take more space than thousands of small ones. Here are three ways to find them, from easiest to most thorough.

1. The Storage list

Open System Settings → General → Storage and click the ⓘ next to Documents. Large Files lists your biggest documents, and you can delete them right there.

  1. In Finder, press Command-F.
  2. Change “Kind” to Other…, tick File Size, and set it to is greater than 1 GB.
  3. Add another rule with + for Last opened date to find big files you haven’t touched in a while.

3. Terminal

This lists files in your home folder over 1 GB:

Terminal
find ~ -type f -size +1G 2>/dev/null

What usually turns up

Old disk images and installers in Downloads, screen recordings, virtual machines, video projects and phone backups. Check what a file is before you delete it: “old” doesn’t always mean unneeded.

Large & Old

Or let Tinymop look

Large & Old finds big files and files you haven’t opened in a long time, shows where each one is and how big it is, and lets you open it in Finder before deciding.
